The Pilgrims

The Pilgrims were a group of people who fled England in search of religious freedom. After a short stay in Amsterdam, they were concerned that they were losing their own customs and adapting too much to Amsterdam's customs they decided to move on to the new world: North America, to establish a colony all their own where they could create and continue their own traditions and cultures as well as practice their religion freely. The Pilgrims took a boat called the Mayflower to the new world,

In 1620, the Pilgrims reached America. When they arrived they suffered terrible hardships and many of them died in their first winter from sickness. The pilgrims were not accustomed to this new land and did not know how to survive there. That is until they became friends with the Native Americans who lived nearby. These Native Americans help them by showing them how to hunt and fish and grow crops. The Pilgrims celebrated their friendship with a three day long feast which became thanksgiving.
